What We Do

Day Shelter

Our Day Shelter supports unsheltered neighbors experiencing homelessness in the community by providing a safe sleeping space, food, hygiene products, and access to therapists, counselors, peer support coaches, and other essential support service providers. Hours are Monday 9 am – 6 pm, Tuesday 9 am – 1 pm, Wednesday – Friday 9 am – 6 pm and Saturday 9 am – 4 pm.

RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM

We are a program-based homeless shelter for single women and women with children (under the age of 18) that offers a 30-day initial stay, and grant 30-day extensions if residents are actively working toward goals. We can house up to 24 residents at a time. Our shelter consists of sleeping rooms for single women or women with children. We provide residents with a safe sleeping space and stable environment so that they may focus on their goals of obtaining permanent, stable housing. We work with each individual client to identify barriers to success, obtain employment, savings, and financial management. We are not a Domestic Violence shelter and do not offer that level of security. If you are actively fleeing a domestically violent situation, please connect with appropriate resources.

MEN’S SERVICES

We recognize that homelessness is not an issue limited to women and children. At this time, while we are unable to provide long-term shelter services to men. We may be able to provide short-term, offsite, sleeping hour accommodations for men in certain
situations.

HOMELESS PREVENTION SERVICES

We help individuals and families experiencing homelessness, or at risk of becoming homeless, by providing resources, education, and assistance. Priority is based on situational needs such as sudden job loss, prescribed medications, rent/housing, utilities, vehicle trouble, accidental or emergency, and other needs that are essential for sustaining life and/or health.

How to Volunteer/Help

Hope for the Homeless
Because of the generosity and community support from partners, donors, and volunteers who are committed to our mission, we are able to achieve our goals of helping individuals and families experiencing homelessness, and those at risk for homelessness, in the communities we serve. You give hope to the homeless with your continued financial support, donations of items from our "wish list", and the time spent volunteering.

We understand the value of time. When you choose to share your time and talents by volunteering; whether providing services to the families in the shelter, assisting with planning, coordinating, and hosting fundraising events, or you're more comfortable helping sort, process, and assist with placement of donated items at the Beyond Homeless Boutique & Thrift Store, you become part of an inclusive community committed to build upon and expand our mission and vision to "help struggling families move Beyond Homeless".

Simply complete and return the
volunteer application and we'll contact you to discuss your interests, so your time is spent where you want to have the biggest impact.

Testimonials

Meet Brandi:

While attempting to leave a bad relationship, Brandi arrived at Beyond Homeless in early 2021. She developed her plans to get back on her feet and was progressing when she slipped in her recovery and entered an intensive rehab program that treated the source of her addiction, providing her with the tools and techniques she needed to be successful in all areas of her life, not just recovery. Six months later, she came back to Beyond Homeless. After working as a resident volunteer, she was brought onto the Beyond Homeless Team as a Shift Monitor in November of 2021, obtained housing, and is now making plans to spend time with her son, and advance her career by working with individuals who suffer with substance abuse and addiction.

Meet Dustyn:

In late October 2021, Beyond Homeless was contacted by the Director of Education at South Putnam High School about a young man who had aged out of foster care, has special needs and was couch surfing with friends, but determined to finish his last year of high school. Initially refusing assistance from Beyond Homeless, Dustyn was persuaded by his teachers and assistant principal at South Putnam High School to go to the newly opened Beyond Homeless Men’s Shelter where he wouldn’t have to worry about suddenly being homeless on the streets, and could focus on graduating with his classmates. Over the remaining school year, Dustyn worked diligently to overcome the challenges of e-learning days caused by COVID and a snowstorm; receiving support and encouragement from the Beyond Homeless team that allowed him to focus on graduating with his friends at school. In April 2022 he received notification that his hard work was paying off. He was accepted to Ivy Tech in the fall. In May 2022, Dustyn graduated with the rest of the South Putnam High School Class of 2022. He plans to study Criminal Justice and Cyber Security at Ivy Tech.
